So, how was July?

A heatwave and a change of personal circumstances…

So, how was July?

Well, “hot” is the short answer. And I’ve also handed in my notice at my day job (to take a day job somewhere else). But more importantly, that magical thing happened whilst writing The Nice Guy and the Devil where the mysterious extra element suddenly appeared.

Writing can be a very strange process. I’ve heard it described once as like driving at night; you can see only as far ahead as your headlights reach, everything beyond that is a mystery (although I should add that you should always know what your final destination is). Personally, I’ve thought of it more like marching through a blizzard, you need to have regular markers on the path otherwise you’ll lose your way.

Don’t get lost!

Writing the second half of the novel I’ve known there was something missing, some extra element that will arrive without me looking for it. In The Florentine it was Vermuth’s habit of “capturing” people with kompromat, which arrived in my head just as I needed it. In this novel, well… you’ll just have to wait until 6 May. If only the book could finish itself without me.

Until next time, enjoy the sunshine! ☀😎
